SHORT Bios of 2016-17 US Tour group

 

NAME:VEN. GESHE LHARAMPA YOUNTE SHERPA (Alias Geshe Lobsang Yowten)


Geshe Lharampa Younte Sherpa (alias dharma name: Lobsang Yowten) born on 5/8/1967 at Sonada, Darjeeling (Indian State of West Bengal). From age 8-15, he studied at the local school. While studying at School, at the age of 9, he became a monk and received his Getsul vows (novice ordination vows) from Khensur Tamding Tsewang at his native place. For three years, he studied the basic elementary texts and scriptures reading at his native place. In 1985, after getting blessing from His Holiness the Dalai Lama at Bodh Gaya, he joined Drepung Gomang Monastery. With veneration and prostration to His Holiness the Dalai Lama from whom he received his Gelong Vows (Bhikhu ordination, Full ordination vows) in 10/10/1988, since then he has been sincerely observing and abiding his vows with great respect, devotion and determination to serve all sentient beings. While at Drepung Gomang Monastery, he took initial training in in memorization of the general Tibetan Buddhist prayers, writing, reading and other preliminary studies, then gradually studied the (Five Major Treatise on Buddhist Philosophy, 16 year courses) and has also passed all the Gelug Gyuktoe (Gelug University Examination of six years course) with remarkable result and was conferred Geshe Lharampa title in 2005 (equivalent to Ph.D in Western University). He also joined one-year mandatory Tantrayana course at Gyumed Tantric College around end of 2005. As the member of Sacred Arts Tour group 2016, he is qualified in conducting all the religious ceremonies and prayer chants, Buddhist rituals. He is also qualified to provide religious teachings, talks and will participate in any interfaith discussion. He will participate in Cultural Pageant as Chöd Master. He will lead the monastery’s tour 2016.

NAME: VEN. GESHE TSOKNYE

Geshe Tsoknye was born at Dharamsala. From young age, he has great wishes to become a monk. At the age of 11, he received his Getsul vows (novice vows) from Venerable Gedun Gyatso and became monk, studied reading of Buddhist texts at his native place. In 1991, he joined Drepung Gomang Monastery where he started studies on the elementary monastic texts. He received his Gelong vows (vows of fully ordained monk) from His Holiness the Dalai Lama in 1996. He has completed all the monastic class (Five Major Treatise on Buddhist Philosophy, 16 year courses) and was honored with Geshe title in 2009. He also joined one-year mandatory course on tantrayana at Gyumed Tantric College in 2011. As the member of Sacred Arts Tour group of 2016, he is profoundly qualified in conducting religious ceremonies, chants and rituals and also qualified in construction of Buddhist religious Sand Mandala, conducting workshop on Sand Mandala and Buddhist religious butter sculpture. During the cultural pageant, he will participate as the Chöd Master during chanting, Tashi Sholpa (good Luck) dance and playing the religious musical instrument of Gyaling (little Trumpet), drum and also cymbals. He has visited Russia in 2009 with official group of the monastery.

 NAME: VEN. GESHE TSEPAK LOBSANG


Born in 1981 at Mundgod, Tsepak Lobsang became monk in 1989 at his native place and joined Drepung Gomang Monastery in 1991 to pursue further monastic studies. Since then he has been active in his religious practice and studies and completed monastic curriculum which he was honored with Geshe Kabchu title in 2011. As the member of Sacred Arts tour group 2016, he is the Chant Master and well qualified in all the religious chanting during religious ceremonies, master in construction of Sand Mandala painting, he  will be performing in Snow Lion Dance and Chöd, playing drum and little trumpet (gyaling) during the cultural Pageant. He is highly expert and qualified in painting, butter sculpting. He also visited Slovenia in 2001, Italy 2003, Russia in 2012 as religious group and USA in 2014-15.

NAME:  VEN. SHERAB DHARGAY


Sherab Dhargay born in 1976 at Mundgod in the Indian state of Karnataka. At the age of 16, he became a monk and received his novice vows (Getsul vows) from Venerable Tenzin Thinley. He started his initial studies on reading texts at his native place. He joined Drepung Gomang Monastery in 1995 where he studied the elementary texts under his teacher and then continued his further monastic studies on Buddhist Philosophy. He received his Gelong vows (vows of fully ordained monk) from His Holiness the Dalai Lama in 1997.  At present, he is studying at Kyab bog: preparatory class to Gelug examination) of monastic curriculum. As the member of this sacred art group 2016, he is qualified in the construction of Sand Mandala, Butter sculpture, religious ceremonies.  During the cultural pageant, he will be participating in Snow Lion Dance, Yak dance and Chöd ritual, he will be also playing Dungchen (Long Horn; religious musical instrument).

 NAME: VEN. STANZIN DAWA



Stenzin Dawa was born Leh, Ladakh in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. He became monk at the age of 16 in 1995 at his native place and received his novice vows (Getsul) from Thiksey Khenpo in 1995. He studied the basic elementary texts and scriptures reading at his native place. In 2000, he joined Drepung Gomang Monastery to pursue extensive studies on Buddhist Philosophy as per the monastic tradition. In 2002, he received his Gelong vows (vows of fully ordained monk:full ordination) from His Holiness the Dalai Lama. At present, he is studying at Kyab bog: preparatory class to Gelug examination) of monastic curriculum. As the member of Sacred Arts Tour group of 2016, he is qualified in conducting religious ceremonies, chants and rituals and also expert in construction of Buddhist religious Sand Mandala, conducting workshop on Sand Mandala and Buddhist religious butter sculptures. During the cultural pageant, he will participate in Snow Lion Dance, Yak Dance and as a Chöd Master during ritual and will be playing the religious musical instrument of drum and also cymbals.

NAME:  VEN. SANGEY GYATSO

   
Sangey Gyatso born in 1978 at remote village of Bura in  Eastern Tibet. At the young age of 10, he became a monk and received his novice vows (Getsul vows) from Chung gye Rinpoche. He joined Drepung Gomang Monastery in 2001 where initially studied the elementary texts under his teacher and then continued his further monastic studies as per the curriculum on Buddhist Philosophy here at the monastery. He received his Gelong vows (vows of fully ordained monk) from His Holiness the Dalai Lama in 2003.  At present, he is studying at Zoe Class (Abhidharmakosh) of monastic curriculum. As the member of this sacred art group 2016, he is qualified in the construction of Sand Mandala, Butter sculpture, religious ceremonies.  During the cultural pageant, he will be participating yak dance and Chöd ritual, he will be also playing Dungchen (Long Horn; religious musical instrument).

Born in 1982 at Mundgod, Jamyang Samdup at the age of 20 became a monk and received his novice vows (Getsul vows) from Venerable Jamyang Gyatso. He joined Drepung Gomang Monastery in 2002 where he initially studied the elementary texts under his teacher and then continued his further monastic studies on Buddhist Philosophy. He received his Gelong vows (vows of fully ordained monk) from His Holiness the Dalai Lama in 2012.  At present, he is studying at Zoe Class (Abhidharmakosh) of monastic curriculum. As the member of this sacred art group 2016, he is qualified in the construction of Sand Mandala, Butter sculpture, religious ceremonies.  During the cultural pageant, he will be participating in Yak dance, Snow Lion Dance and Chöd ritual, he will be also playing Gyaling (little Trumpet) religious instrument.

NAME:VEN. THINLAY GYATSO


Born in Mundgod in 1978, Thinay Gyatso became monk at the age of 10 at his native place and studied reading of Buddhist texts at his native place. In 1998, he joined Drepung Gomang Monastery and received his novice vows (Gelong vows) from Venerable Geshe Samten and started studies on the elementary monastic texts on Buddhist Philosophy. He received his Gelong vows (vows of fully ordained monk) from His Holiness the Dalai Lama in 2003. At present, he is studying at Kyab bog class (preparatory class to Gelug examination) of monastic curriculum. As the member of this sacred art group 2016, he is qualified in the construction of Sand Mandala, Butter sculpture, religious ceremonies.  During the cultural pageant, he will be participating in Tashi Sholpa dance (Good luck dance) and Snow Lion dance, he will be also religious instrument Gyaling (little Trumpet), drum and also cymbals.
